Master's Thesis
As I finished my Master’s Degree in Special Education I wrote my thesis on The Daily Use of Restorative Practice Connection Circles to Increase Positive Behaviors Towards Teachers. Students who have been identified as having emotional disturbance (ED) and require emotional support services have poor interpersonal skills and struggle to form relationships between teachers and peers (Green, 2018). Poor interpersonal skills inhibit students’ ability to communicate with others in a respectful demeanor. If students do not communicate in a respectful manner, it can cause the students to get in trouble and be negatively disciplined. Negative discipline can include, but is not limited to, lunch and/or after school detention, in and out of school suspension, and expulsion. According to Clawson, Davis, Gerewitz, and Gregory, negative discipline has been studied to show that it does not prevent future misbehavior, but it does cause more negative behaviors to occur, and “after accounting for demographics attendance, and course performance, each additional suspension further decreases a student’s odds of graduating high school by 20%” (Clawson et al., 2016, p. 325). Negative behaviors in students can cause negative counteractions to take place involving the student and others.
